Louise Nevelson, Sky Cathedral, 1958

Having started with small monochromatic works, Nevelson ventured into a larger scale – and by the end of her life, she had moved onto monumental sculptures. She proved that women’s work could be part of the public arena and that large-scale artworks were and are not the sole domain of male artists.

Shape-Shifting Paper Sculpture Resembling Stone
Artist: Li Hongbo

Reflection Statement:

The three sculptures visually communicate a sense of movement, each form playing off the others in a dynamic conversation. While exploring materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on the emotional response they might evoke in the viewer. Because of this, I decided to include contrasting textures and organic forms to create a more visceral and engaging experience.

As I worked, I began to feel that the sculptures weren't being pushed far enough conceptually or visually. To address this, I took the time to step back, walk around each piece, and view them from multiple angles. This helped me identify areas where I could push the forms further—whether through gesture, balance, or negative space.

After completing this project, I feel most inspired to continue exploring wood as a primary material. Its versatility, warmth, and natural character offer endless possibilities for experimentation and emotional expression.

Inspired by nature, Alex Uribe creates sculptures exclusively from recycled, corrugated cardboard, both in large and small scale. Featured here are Uribe’s figurative, organic shapes, exploring abstract ideas rather than realism. Just as interesting are Uribe’s exposition of the female form as seen in Koura, Lucia, and Jodi.

Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan work as a husband and wife team primarily in the medium of cardboard. Their soaring installations fill gallery spaces, reaching from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

Dinner and a movie

 Dinner and a movie

Title: Cold Meal, Warm Gun

Materials: digital Photograph
Inspired by the movie 5th Wave

Artiest Statment
In this work, I explore the themes of survival and chaos. By juxtaposing simple, everyday sustenance — canned beans, bread, a tin cup — with objects of violence and survival such as bullets and a knife, I aim to create a visual tension that speaks to the fragility of existence in times of chaos. The scattered shells and the dark, almost oppressive lighting evoke an atmosphere of war or crisis, yet the meal remains central, a symbol of persistence and humanity even in the harshest conditions. The deliberate messiness of the spilled beans further blurs the line between nourishment and destruction, inviting the viewer to reflect on the uneasy coexistence of survival and violence. This piece is a meditation on resilience — on what it means to endure, to find small comforts amid disruption, and to carry on feeding the body while the world around demands arms. The bright light concentrated at the center creates a sense of being targeted or watched, as if under surveillance or threat. In contrast, the surrounding darkness suggests the unknown — an uncertain space beyond immediate reach. I also incorporated repeated circular forms and rotations throughout the composition, using them as a subtle, non-linear way to evoke the passage of time and the cyclical nature of survival.
